What’s an STS session like?

So, you’ve been looking around, you’ve got some questions but you think Valkyrie Gym might be a good fit for you.

What’s next?

Let’s have a walk down STS lane a second and have a look around!

Q: What happens in an STS session?

An STS (Shoot the Shit) session is a conversation between you and one or two of the folks from Valkyrie. That’s us!

The appointments go for about an hour and largely involve talking; not just jumping straight onto the gym floor.
Depending on the circumstance, we may conduct a brief movement assessment to help our team give more individualised advice about onboarding and training.

It may also help you build a better picture of where you’re at right now.

“Sitting down for a chat with two lovely, knowledgeable people that were genuinely interested in my experience and supportive of my courage to try things that are hard for me <3”

Q: What’s discussed in an STS?

We can talk about anything that comes up for you around exercise and training! We might ask:

  • have you trained in a gym or done any sports before? how’d it go?

  • have you got any injuries or restrictions at the moment?

  • how do you see training fitting in with your current lifestyle?

  • what is your motivation to start strength training?

Each appointment is different based on the individual’s needs. We are just here to find out how we can help best, no matter what that outcome looks like.

I thought I wouldn’t be in a place to start the classes/participate properly but Sam and Hugo were really positive and honest with me in the movement assessment and this helped heaps.”

Q: Why can’t I just get straight into classes? Is this necessary?

Our onboarding system has come from years of trial and error and figuring out what works best. If we found that jumping straight into classes delivered the best results, then that’s what we would offer.

Time and time again we find the same thing; when folks take a moment to slow down their introduction (or reintroduction) to training, and acknowledge past experiences and future goals, they head off on the right foot.

A more intentional start = a more sustainable training trajectory.

Though it takes time to get started with us and you can’t just jump into your first class without onboarding, we are confident your patience will pay dividends over the years of training to come.

“The PT sessions were great and gave me confidence to execute the fundamental movements unsupervised. I loved the attention to detail and technical focus.”

Q: Do I have to sign up for a membership?

Short answer: No.

Long answer:

It’s important that you are in control of your own story at Valkyrie every step of the way.

We lay out the options and help you understand what your choices are, and you make the decisions.
This mentality goes from STS all the way to decisions make while training in group classes.

Your initial consultation (STS session) is time put aside to openly discuss the best options for your training goals, based on your experiences so far and your intentions for the future.

We don’t know what the best option for you will be until we’ve met you and heard your story!

You don’t need to sign up for anything or pay anything for the session. Based on the discussion during the STS, we may put together some suggestions based on what we’ve learned about you and what we’ve seen work in the past.

If they make sense to you, you’re welcome to sign up on the day. If you need more time to think, or we’re not the right fit for you right now; there’s no obligation from us!

“I didn’t feel pressure to sign up, like at all! I felt encouraged but that the choice was completely mine to make and there is a huge difference between those two feelings.”
