Benefits of Onboarding (BOO!)

The wide world of fitness and strength training is, well, very wide and also very wild…

From generalised advice from insta-famous gurus to out-of-the-box programs and exercises from online coaches, it seems that there’s never been a better time to invest time learning about how to manage and improve your own health, strength and fitness.


“getting on top of my fitness will be a breeze!” said no-one ever…


We all know (and what you’ve probably experienced first-hand) is that the reality of “modern fitness” is a world where the “solves” to your struggles are often irrelevant and non-specific to your complex, real human problems.


That’s where we come in…


We’ve worked with a whole bunch of diverse and funky folks that don’t really fit the “gym junkie” mould.

They’re mostly everyday peeps that want to feel strong, move better and belong to a rad community (it’s all very wholesome, really).

And what we’ve noticed from all these years of being “people persons”, is that spending quality time with folks to:

  • understand their own unique story

  • listen to their previous history with training and fitness

  • and openly explore what specific goals and outcomes they want to achieve

…ultimately leads them to unlock strength training and fitness in a way that was once impossible.


The trick with kicking this strength stuff off is to get things started…just right, but the process we have in place now at Valkyrie Gym is pretty straight up and down.

It goes like this:

 
  1. Reach out (let’s be friends!)

Straight up, we just want to get to know you. Building a relationship with our new and returning members is something that’s pretty important.

Putting yourself out there in this wide, wild and overwhelming world of fitness (see above) can be a vulnerable experience, especially if things have been a bit “touch and go” in the past.

But by being friendly folks + flexing our knowledge without being judgmental, we can ensure that new members feel safe, seen and heard and that their journey to big strength gains will be as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

We do this by phone and initially chat about:

  • what people are looking for

  • If we’re the right space for their goals

  • and logistics like pricing and timetable, specific to their goals

 

2. Our Shoot The Shit Session aka STS sesh (let’s meet!)

On the surface access to more “tips and tricks” from gym gurus is great, but what we’ve experienced from people who work with us is that all this info is often too overwhelming or not relevant to their own unique journey thus far.

When we meet up with potential new members, we run them through our STS session.

It’s our chance to dive deep into some of the initial barriers folks have experienced with the whole “gym scene”. We love to explore some of the big dreams people have and It’s often a great experience for everyone.

You can expect to walk away with a clear sense of how to get from point A to B, without all the bullshit.

We also spend time on the gym floor running through a casual “movement check-in” to see how each individual person moves. This is a pretty important step when it comes to figuring out what specific exercise are going to work for them straight off the bat. It also lets us know what movements are going to make their body “happy” and safe and gives our new members a bit of peace of mind moving forward.

 

3. Personal Training & Skills Sessions (let’s learn!)

Many people that we work with mention that they’ve never had a formal introduction to lifting weights or strength training of any kind.

It’s hard to get started if you have no idea of what to do right?!

Which is why the next step of our onboarding process is when we get our brains switched on and get our bodies moving!

Our onboarding specialists (Alice and Hugo), will take you through a structured skills session(s) designed to:

  • build your confidence in a group setting (see below)

  • get to grips with fundamental strength principles (how to get strong af)

  • and learn how to use specific equipment like a pro

There’s no hard cap on how many sessions you can do however getting at least one of these super valuable session under your belt will fast track your training ten-fold.

When you’re ready, your coach will give you “the nod” to signal that it’s time to increase your frequency with classes and close out your onboarding experience as you join in with the rest of Valkyrie Family.

 

4. Get started with classes (off you go!)

At this point you’ve:

  • been intro’d into the Valkyrie World over the phone

  • locked in a individualised plan to crush your goals with our STS

  • been taught the skills and fundamentals to make dreams 👉 reality, by our top coaches

  • friend, you’re ready to go!!!

*It’s time to start classes and just like that, you’re on your way!

It’s pretty cool huh…?*

It’s a bit of commitment, and can be a little scary but there’s a lot of pros to onboarding properly with coaches who care!
